Reading a block before you buy it

Polished black granite slab

Two slabs from the same block can look like different stones. Here is what we look at first.

The block decides everything

A block is cut into slabs in order, and the slabs nearest each other carry the same veining. Buy from the middle of one block and you get a matched set; buy the last two slabs of two different blocks and you get a conversation.

What to look at

  • Veining: does it run with your layout or against it?
  • Porosity: a dry block drinks water faster.
  • Colour depth: wet the surface before you judge it.

Ask for the slabs to be laid out together. It is a five-minute request that saves a month of explaining.
